I Thought It Was Spring...

Well, it's been Spring for a few weeks I think.  We got a hint of warmth last weekend.  It was about 65 and brilliantly sunny on Saturday and Sunday.  But today on the walk home from work it was windy and pretty cold.  I've never been in a place that stayed cold for so long.  Now, I know that in the Midwest and many other places around the U.S. it stays MUCH colder, but I'm coming from the Northwest where the weather is just so different.  Winters there are cold at times, but mostly just WET.  Here, it's the complete opposite.  It's probably rained less than 20 times since I've been here.  Very dry climate.  Anyway, I can just see the warm weather creeping closer, and I look forward to soaking up as much of it as I can.

Not sure if I mentioned it before, but I had been playing in an ultimate frisbee league which just ended last weekend.  It was a great community of people.  I like frisbee because it's one of the few sports that I think I'm pretty good at.  A lot of people think frisbee isn't a "real" sport and that it's for losers, but my theory is that those people just haven't ever played or watched a serious game.  Let me tell you, this game is tough.  Not only are you almost constantly running, but throwing and catching a frisbee is harder than it looks, especially with someone standing a foot away from you waving their arms in your face trying to block you.  Ultimate frisbee is a no-contact sport, so there is no tackling or even touching.  But when you get people running as hard as they can with their eyes focused in the air, jumping up to catch a frisbee, the injuries add up quickly.  There were a few badly sprained ankles, many a bruised and bloody leg, and we even had a broken nose on our team.  Our team started the season of roughly and we lost our first few games.  As the season went on, we started playing really well together and we ended up making it to the semi-finals, losing to the team which went on to win the championships.  The teams were all named after types of weather.  We were the Hurricanes, and there were also the Heat, Thunder, Lightning, Tsunami, and Storm.

 The Hurricanes!

Sneaking up behind this guy to swat away his catch.

Another block here.

So anyway, frisbee ended on Saturday, and on Sunday the Daegu Softball League started, which I'm also playing in.  This league is bigger, with about 8 teams, and it's very well organized, as they've been doing it for a few years.  Our team's first game was kind of a trial run just to see all of our skill levels and which positions we should play.  We lost, but not by much.  Next week we should give it a better run.

After that weekend, I was pretty sore on Monday and Tuesday.  Need to do some more stretching I suppose.  But it feels good to be getting some exercise.  I do walk to school and back every day which takes about 20 minutes one way, but having some real exercise feels good.  Both of the leagues I've mentioned consist of predominantly foreign players, so you almost forget you're in Korea for a few hours.  But like I said, they are great communities of people and I've had a lot of fun so far.  The only downside is that my Sunday afternoons are taken so I can't use the whole weekend to travel.  But I haven't had any real problems with it yet.

In other news, Kodi is coming back to visit in May!  She's graduating from the University of Northern Iowa and then heading out here for a nice visit.  Should be warm enough by then to hit the beach (secretly I think this is her true motive for coming to visit)!

  1. Hi Evan, This is Deborah, Ann and John's neighbor. We are actually now living in Portland, but anyway, I thought I'd check in to see how you're doing, and I just had to laugh at your description of the climate in SK, because on a three month trip there, I thought the same thing...wow, it's dry here. And THEN, I think it was in August, the monsoon season hit. I swear, they got as much rain in one month as we do all year in the NW. It was insane. You literally felt you'd be pulverized at times by stepping outside. And the thunder was awesome. But, it was exciting and marvelous! Hope you're having a great trip. Cheers!
